Why We Founded Erich Reiss Publishing

A new independent publishing house, a deliberately chosen name, and the books we want to bring into the world.

Every publishing house begins with a question: which books deserve the time, care, and space to find their readers?

Erich Reiss Publishing was founded in the United States in 2026 to make room for distinctive voices across borders and genres. We publish in English, German, and Spanish. Our interests range from romance, MM and LGBTQ+ fiction, and fantasy to nonfiction about society, politics, and culture. The subjects differ; the commitment to clear writing, thoughtful editing, and an independent point of view does not.

Why this name?

In Berlin, the Jewish publisher Erich Caesar Reiss built a house for literature, drama, and reportage in the early twentieth century. Among its authors was Egon Erwin Kisch, whose Der rasende Reporter appeared under the Erich Reiss imprint in 1924. The Nazi persecution of Reiss brought that publishing history to a violent end. He was imprisoned in 1938, escaped to Sweden, and emigrated to the United States in 1939.

We chose the name with that history in mind. Erich Reiss Publishing is a new company; it is not the legal successor to the historic Berlin house. We cannot undo the rupture in its story. We can remember it honestly and bring selected works back to readers with the context they deserve.

Our first step

Our annotated 2026 edition of Kisch’s Der rasende Reporter brings together the original work with a new introduction, historical context, and editorial notes. It begins a selective program of rediscovery, alongside the new writing that defines our wider list.

Independent publishing also means making room for authors who do not fit a narrow template. We want stories with memorable characters and nonfiction willing to examine its own assumptions. We want books that can cross languages and borders without losing their particular voice.

This is the beginning. We invite readers, booksellers, reviewers, and writers to explore the list and follow what comes next.
